Young Adolescents/Teenage Fiction
Tom, 13, has a stepfather who hates him and a mother pregnant with twins. With Mum hospitalised, Tom is sent to his aunt in Yorkshire. Bryony, a local farmer’s daughter, and Aretha, a spirit child with a mysterious connection to Tom, help him understand the true causes of his unhappiness.
Review by reader in the Times/Chickenhouse competition 2007 (Aretha’s Hill came in the top 1% of over 2000 entries):
Aretha’s Hill deals with the emotional impact of separation and loss with insight and sensitivity; self-harm is described and explained within this context, but not condoned. The supernatural element provides an air of mystery, as well as a catalyst for change and a positive outcome for the environmental theme. A sense of closure is achieved with this strand even though there are still problems to be resolved in the real world. The novel is realistic: the author has a good ear for dialogue; convincing first person narrative; believable interaction between characters. Wide age-appeal.

A novel about France in two world wars.
A few days after Billy Leigh's nineteenth birthday, Roland Murphy sees him cop a sniper's bullet in the mouth.
Between the wars, Roland’s son Philippe and his best friend Paul are in love with the same girl, Jacqui. But Jacqui only has eyes for Paul. And she really loves the scar on his face - it makes him look as if he's always smiling.
During the Nazi Occupation, Philippe and Paul live in constant fear of Germans on the lookout for French kids to send to work in German factories.
To avoid this compulsory labour scheme Paul joins the Milice or French Gestapo. But Philippe takes a different route – he joins the French Resistance.
While hiding from the Nazis in the forest, Philippe goes swimming with some young patriots. One of them is circumcised - he must be a Jew.
In an attack on a German convoy, Philippe is wounded and found by a German officer with a scar on his face. And his mouth is twisted into a permanent smile...

General Fiction / Adventure
In the dying days of Empire Great Britain was involved in many small 'bush wars'. She required a huge army, conscription was the answer. Young men from every walk of life were used to maintain as peaceful withdrawal as possible. This is the story of some who went to Malaya.
Review – ‘The book is set in Malaya during the Emergency years - the mid fifties - and covers the war from differing points of view which in itself makes it interesting. At this time my father was a serving soldier in Malaya and I was a schoolboy living in married quarters with my mother and sister. This story was pure de ja vue, I was back there with the smells, the sounds and occasional fear. If you know nothing about this conflict then it is well worth the read; it is exciting, realistic, funny and piognant. The soldier speak is just right and the humour of 'Tommy' is unique and so well written. The author must have served to have such a deep understanding of soldiers and what they act and speak like.
The battle scenes are clearly illustrated and believable - again - only somebody who had gone through such confusion could write about it so convincingly. For anyone who is at all interested in the history of our withdrawal from Empire, a good action story and wants a good laugh, then I would thoroughly recommend this book.' - W Clissold

A gentle informative book written in detail for her grandchildren about her childhood during WW2 in Co. Durham. She writes about family life, make do and mend recycling and the constant threat overhanging alll wrapped up in their excellent community life. The book starts on September 3rd 1939.
Amazon review writtten by Mrs M. Oliphant:
This is a delightful non fiction account of one woman's life as a child in a small market town in the north east of England during the second world war. It is written with humour and a strong sense of belonging to the era she lived through. She decided to write this account when her grandchildren started asking her about her childhood experiences. Her wonderful powers of observance for both the pathos of life shines through her writing. Her love and admiration for the fortitiude of her own grandmothers is evident and her descriptions of her maternal grandmother's home is beautifully graphic. It is illustrated with evocotive old photographs and delightful line drawings - courtesy of her granddaughter.

Dix Mardun finds himself a reluctant hero, helping aliens to stop human-created sentient weapons being exported off-planet; weapons like the one his girlfriend now finds herself in. Review from amazon.co.uk website: four stars from a possible five.
Proof that corporate shenanigans and human frailties will both transcend and be magnified by our move into space and subsequent contact with alien life. 'Interaction' takes a little while to hit its stride, feeling its way between kitchen sink drama, noirish tale and straight sci-fi. But when it does, the spare story-telling, solid characters and very alien aliens work well. For me, the story was unveiled in too staccato a way. But this was a small price to pay for some original and entertaining thoughts.

Review: “Congratulations on writing a book which is a thrilling read. I found it full of suspense with connections made in a far from obvious way. The detail on France, especially the police set-up, gave it real credibility. It strikes me that the story might well be the basis for a very good film.” Eric Hawkins, Lyme Regis Art Group.

A trophy wife and her house cleaner. An impoverished student and a smug professor. Three documentary filmmakers and their eccentric subjects. Siblings with little in common. A bitter catering employee and her ambitious boss. Five witty, disturbing tales about obsessive, destructive relationships born of personal desire and class conflict.
Review: Gleefully Nasty Entertainments, J. Amador "Pop Culture Junkie"
"These five short stories are bracing, quick immersions into the minds of women who are sometimes passive, sometimes spiteful, sometimes passively spiteful protagonists and anti-heroes in keeping with the theme of envy and revenge. Ms. Miskowski captures the [Pacific] NW milieu, its surroundings and the resultant class warfare with aplomb. If you've ever found yourself frustrated by the Emerald City, you are likely to hear your thoughts echoed by one of the characters. As with any collection of short fiction, some stories connect better than others. For me, the highlights were "A Personal Recommendation" and the titular story that begins the collection. Reading these stories is like watching electric eels from not too safe a distance: You're fascinated, you have a sense of where they're going, but you don't know if or when they will suddenly turn around and shock you."

Shrouded Eagle is the story of a young man, Maurice Rodange, who risking his life, and facing the loss of the girl he loves, becomes involved in the boy’s future. The Great War created many stories of exceptional poignancy and outstanding heroism. The story of John Travers Cornwell, a sixteen year old cockney boy from the East End can, without question, be included with the most courageous and most heart-rending of tales from that terrible conflict.
In an age when a sense duty was considered a desirable quality and courage what every male sought to demonstrate; John Travers Cornwell was conspicuous.
He entered the Royal Navy in 1915 as an unknown boy entrant and in 1916 he became the most celebrated hero of the war. Every school in the country displayed his photograph and the Boy Scouts instituted a special medal, named the Cornwell Badge, which was awarded for acts of great courage and devotion to duty.
In recognition of his exceptional act during the Battle of Jutland he was awarded the highest honour his country could bestow; the Victoria Cross.
